Pizza with Fry Street roots

The Tomato Pizza, the new iteration of Fry Street’s beloved The Flying Tomato, relaunched on wheels serving the same pizza recipe locals know.

Locals waited in line at the Austin Street Truck Stop on Sunday afternoon to taste the legacy pizza by the slice and personal-size, stuffed Chicago-style pizza just like they used to do at the old store.

The pizzeria opened in 1984 at the corner of Fry and Hickory streets, and Becky and Robert “Ski” Slusarski bought it in 1996, renaming it The Tomato in ’98. Their son, Michael, relaunched the pizzeria, this time opening in a food truck.

The Tomato Pizza officially opened on Wednesday May 24. The food truck will be open Wednesday through Saturday from 5 to 11 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. at the Austin Street Truck Stop, 208 N Austin St.
