Orientation at a school the size of the University of North Texas can feel like a daunting event. If you’re someone navigating the UNT website just trying to make sure you’ve got all the bases covered, it can also be difficult to find the information you need.
We're breaking down everything you’ll need to know to be fully prepared here.
What do I need to do beforehand?
UNT requests that you have the following things done before your orientation date:
- Register for an orientation date. Keep in mind you will register for your fall courses at your orientation, so it is in your best interest to sign up for the soonest available date so you have the most course options available to you.Â
- Complete your pre-orientation homework, which is uploaded weekly by UNT.
- Completed or had full exemption from the TSI test
- Completed any placement tests for math or foreign language
- Consider if you would like to attend the music orientation meeting if you wish to take any music courses and are not a music major
- Complete the UNT's diversity and inclusion course online
How much does it cost?
There is a $180 fee for orientation. This must be paid at the time of your orientation registration. This fee covers room and board, various orientation materials, administrative costs and additional orientation/first-year activities that take place throughout the year.
If you're not able to pay the fee at the time of registration, you can defer the payment to your fall course registration fees.
What should I bring?
UNT suggests that you bring the following items with you to ensure that you are fully prepared and comfortable:
- Overnight supplies
- Linens, a blanket and a pillow for your dorm bed, as these things are not provided
- Toiletries
- Shower shoes and a towel if you wish to shower after day one
- Comfortable clothes and shoes for both days
- A water bottle
- Items for inclement weather, such as jackets, umbrellas, etc.
- Additional money for incidentals
- Personal necessities
- Any unsubmitted academic information, such as AP, CLEP and IB exams as well as previous college transcripts

You'll receive a detailed orientation schedule upon arrival, and you will be guided throughout the day, but these are some events students can expect:

- Stay overnight in a dorm

- Opportunities to ask questions about university life
What about parents and families?
UNT offers parent and family orientation sessions which run concurrently with the student orientations. It is suggested that you register for the same orientation date as your student, although this is not a requirement. The fee is $125 for the first adult participant and $95 for a second adult. If any children are to come along, there is a $60 fee per child. These fees cover meals, orientation materials and administrative costs, but not housing. Parent and family guests are welcome to stay on campus or arrange their own accommodations off-campus.
Housing for parent and family orientation on campus is priced depending on the accommodation type:
- Single guest room with shared bathroom and common area: $35
- Single guest room with private bathroom: $45
- Double guest room with private bathroom: $70
