Guyer shortstop Lane Allen (15) fires to first while second baseman Hunter Gural (10) avoids a Flower Mound baserunner during their playoff game Friday at Southlake Carroll Senior High School.
High school softball season is officially over with baseball not far behind in entering its final week of games at the state tournament.
Plenty of local players continued posting strong performances down the stretch as four local squads remained in the running, including Aubrey and Guyer’s softball teams and Guyer and Argyle’s baseball teams. Three of the four saw their seasons end in defeat, while the Eagles earned a trip to Round Rock.
The Denton Record-Chronicle runs down some of the top local performers from last week’s games below.
Erin Love, Guyer
Love delivered in one of the Lady Wildcats’ biggest moments of an historic season as they defeated Bridgeland 6-3 in the state semifinals to earn their first-ever state title game appearance. The senior Hardin-Simmons signee went 2 for 3 with three RBIs in the semifinal victory and was named to the 6A State All-Tournament team.
Lane Allen, Guyer
Allen had a pair of strong showings at the plate in what was otherwise largely a tough series for the Wildcats as they were swept by Flower Mound in their first-ever regional final. The senior Texas pledge hit a combined 5 for 7 for the series, including a 3-for-3 showing as he scored Guyer’s lone run in the series opener.
Conor Lillis, Argyle
Lillis delivered both at the plate and on the mound to help the Eagles rally from dropping Game 1 of their regional final series with Lubbock Cooper and win the next two to reach their sixth state tournament in the last nine seasons. The senior had one RBI and threw two innings of no-hit ball in Game 2, then had another RBI and tossed three innings of one-hit ball to finish the series-clinching win.
Abby Buxton, Aubrey
Buxton had one of the Lady Chaps’ better performances of the day as they suffered a tough 5-1 state semifinal loss to eventual state champion Corpus Christi Calallen. The freshman catcher hit 2 for 3 in the contest with a pair of singles alongside a typically solid performance behind the plate.
