An 18-year-old man was charged with endangering a child Sunday after police pulled him over for allegedly racing on University Drive and learned he had a baby in the car, according to a Denton police report.
At about 6:22 p.m., officers reported observing two sports cars, one beige and one black, traveling at high speeds near Frame Street and East University Drive. The officers allegedly observed them weaving in and out of traffic, committing traffic violations.
The officers activated their emergency lights and sirens to catch up to the vehicles. Both of the vehicles pulled over in the 1400 block of East University Drive.
During interviews with the drivers, officers learned they were leaving Ulta Beauty and headed toward one of the drivers’ homes. While the report did not explicitly say so, police spokesperson Allison Beckwith said it appears the two know each other.
The driver of the beige car, a 19-year-old man, said he had just gotten the vehicle and was testing it out. The report states he did admit that he and the other driver were racing.
The 19-year-old alleged they were driving “no more” than 80 mph. The report states that the speed limit in this area is 40 mph. The report notes that University Drive is a busy highway and the Denton Police Department has worked many fatality crashes due to speeding and racing along U.S. Highway 380.
When police spoke with the driver of the black car, an 18-year-old man, he allegedly denied racing. While speaking with him, police observed he had a 1-year-old child in the vehicle. The report states police believe his driving at a high speed in this area put the child at immediate risk of death or bodily injury.
Police arrested both of the drivers. The 19-year-old was charged with racing on highway. The 18-year-old was also charged with this offense, as well as intentionally, knowingly or recklessly endangering a child.
