Mosquitoes and the cold

We’re approaching mosquito season in North Texas. Many people wonder if our winter was cold enough to limit the number of mosquitoes that will be around this summer. The answer is likely no. Yes, the cold can kill some existing mosquitoes, but many others find ways to survive even in below-zero temperatures. Some go into a hibernation state that protects them from the cold. Unhatched eggs just have to wait until the temperatures get above 70 degrees to start hatching to bug you in the summer months.
