An El Niño watch

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has issued an El Niño watch for the likelihood of an El Niño developing in the coming months. El Niño occurs when ocean water in the equatorial Pacific becomes warmer than normal. The large area of warmed water can influence jet stream patterns across the globe, leading to certain types of weather. For Texas, an El Niño can bring cooler and wetter than normal weather for the fall and winter. This follows three years of La Niña conditions.
