An El NiƱo watch

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has issued an El NiƱo watch for the likelihood of an El NiƱo developing in the coming months. El NiƱo occurs when ocean water in the equatorial Pacific becomes warmer than normal. The large area of warmed water can influence jet stream patterns across the globe, leading to certain types of weather. For Texas, an El NiƱo can bring cooler and wetter than normal weather for the fall and winter. This follows three years of La NiƱa conditions.
