Catahoula's Louisiana Kitchen, in Denton's Unicorn Lake area, closed earlier this year, but Hoochie's off the Square is a great local alternative for Cajun eats.
If you’re feeling down because one of your favorite Denton restaurants or bars had to close up shop recently, don’t fret. Denton has so many beloved food spots to choose from that there are plenty of alternatives for places that had to say goodbye. Here are a few to choose from:
Beer and Breweries
Toasty Bros. small batch brewery will be temporarily closed until September as it moves to a new location on East Prairie Street at the corner of West Hickory Street and Bell Avenue. Howling Mutt Brewing Co. also closed its doors in April but has hinted at a desire to make a return, although no details are set. If you miss Toasty Bros. and Howling Mutt in the meantime, luckily Denton still has Denton County Brewing Company and Eastside.
Denton County Brewing Company has a variety of in-house brewed IPAs, ales, etc. on tap, including an ale from Toasty Bros. If you’re looking for beer brewed as local as it can get right here in Denton, DCBC is the place for you. Eastside has almost 80 Texas brews on tap from places like the DFW area and Austin, as well as options from other states and countries to choose from.
Sandwiches
Patriot Sandwich Co. recently closed its doors amid money troubles and a slew of controversies. If you’re craving a sandwich and want to support a small local business, take yourself down to New York Sub Hub on Avenue C.
Sub Hub is a Denton classic beloved by UNT students, as it sits just off campus. In recent years, Sub Hub has undergone some battles with UNT over eminent domain, so if you’re passionate about keeping small Denton businesses thriving, supporting Sub Hub is a fantastic way to do that.
Cajun Food
Catahoula’sLouisiana Kitchen briefly made its home in Denton off of Interstate 35E but unfortunately had to close its doors in February. If you’re looking for Cajun or seafood in Denton, give Hoochie’s on Hickory Street a try. Hoochie’s offers a variety of seafood dishes as well as traditional Louisiana dishes such as po’ boys, crawfish and gumbo.
